- Domain Name Rules
General
.au Domain
Any
domain name is acceptable so long as:
- it is unique within the chosen domain, eg: .com
(name uniqueness tests are not case sensitive);
- it is at least two characters and less than 26 characters
long; and
- it contains only alphanumeric characters and hyphens,
and starts and finishes with an alphanumeric character.
Additional
restrictions for the .au domain
- the name must be closely derived from either the
legal name of the applicant organisation, or a name
which has been registered as a business name by
an appropriate government authority in Australia
Acceptable names are often the full name, an acronym,
a concatenation or abbreviation of the company or
business name;
- the name cannot be a common English dictionary
word, such as "bread";
- the name cannot be a generic English dictionary
word indicating a class or type, such as "architecture";
- the name cannot be an unqualified Australian place
name such as "Sydney", and
- the name must not contravene any third party's
rights to use the name.
